Hello all, just thought I'd write a bit about myself. Or more specifically, my art. A lot of people see my work, and their first question is almost always "what is wrong with you?" Yes, I will admit it is disturbing, but not as a result of anything that might be going on in my head. It's just that often people have to be shocked or disturbed in order to pay attention (p.s. I don't consider my work to be "shocking").
I want my work to appeal to the morality not of the individual, but rather to the entirety of the human race, or the "collective morality" if you will. I believe that sometimes scientific advances come at a cost to our societal conscience. In other words, first we worry about creating something, and AFTERWARDS wonder if we should have made it in the first place. (think atom bomb) What I see on the horizon is a scientific revolution in the areas of biotechnology and cybertechnology. As an artist, I feel that it is my duty to make sure that the human race asks the proper questions BEFORE we take the plunge, before we begin replacing major portions of our bodies with technological devices.
On a technical note, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is "how do you make your molds?" to which I reply "what molds?" which always recieves a look of puzzlement. Most viewers assume that I am pulling molds off of myself or a model, when in reality all of my forms are hand-modeled in some form or another. In the case of the ceramic pieces, they are all hand-built without the use of molds. The fiberglass pieces are in fact made from molds, but the original form is first modeled in oil-based clay, and then I pull plaster molds from the pieces. Many viewers will note the resemblance between the pieces and myself, and that's because when I use a model it is often myself. However, the resemblance is purely coincedental, and there is no meaning implied by the use of myself as a model.
